I posted earlier about a craft I found where you save all of the tickets you collect from movies, games, plays, etc. and you put them in a picture frame as a decorative addition to your home. (You can find that post in the Crafts Category). I showed the picture I found next to my version and said how I was wanting to make something more like the one I found. Well, I did! And I even took pictures and everything to show you how I made it my own! (I am getting better at this blogging thing!)
Since Dan and I moved, we have not seen my side of the family other than through Skype. My older sister's birthday was coming up and I wanted to do something for her to show her I love her and let her know I was thinking of her. So I bought her some light switch covers. I know, it was very generous of me. Actually, it was what I put ON the light switch covers that made them special; that is where Pinterest came in.
I am a Harry Potter fan and I am constantly looking up Harry Potter facts and other fun things on Pinterest related to the series. I have a board just for it =) I had been seeing these light switch covers people had made where the top says "Lumos" (the spell to make light come from the tip of your wand) and the bottom says "Nox" (the spell to put the light out, or the counter spell to Lumos). Upon further examination I found other Harry Potter related light switch covers with different sayings and quotes. I thought that would be the perfect gift, so I followed the links to find out how to make them. Most of them took me to Etsy where I could just buy them, but I finally found a few that gave a tutorial. I was slightly disappointed when all the tutorials called for Modge Podge, printing off the image, cutting it to fit the cover and so on. I was apparently feeling lazy because I decided to just take a sharpie to the covers themselves and leave them in a place to dry. I started by taking a sharp pencil and gracing the surface of the switch covers to get the letters the right size and the right placement. Then I took the sharpie over the top of that and let it dry. For doing minimal work I am quite proud of how they came out and my sister loved them! I loved this idea from the moment I saw it! Basically you take all the tickets you have accumulated and put them in a picture frame to display as an adorable decoration to your home! I have always been into scrapbooking but have never had the creative ideas needed to make cute scrapbooks (or at least what I considered cute). When I found this idea I was thrilled that I had hung onto tickets from past movies, plays, concerts, etc. I had to make due with what I had at the time so the picture on the right is my version of the picture I found on Pinterest (left). I have yet to find a picture frame that is deep enough to cut a slit in the top so I can spruce up my design.
One thing I have added to my collage that wasn't an idea on Pinterest is that before I put any ticket in the frame, I write on the back of it a couple of words describing what was going on during that time. Just a few key things so if I ever take them out, I can look at what I wrote and remember that occasion. I consider this a type of scrapbook all its own! A few years back for Mother's Day I was trying to think of something really creative to do for my mom. I knew that things like taking her out to dinner or going on a spa day were great and that she would enjoy them, but I wanted something that she would really remember for a long time. Then it hit me. A family photo! I could get me, my sisters, my husband (then boyfriend), and my sister's husband and their little boy all together and we could surprise Mom with a new family photo!
It didn't end up working out. Everyone had very busy schedules and we couldn't find the time to all get together so I had to give up on that idea. But not long after that I came up with my next best idea, a family collage! I don't know what I ate that day that got my creative juices flowing so much, but in a short amount of time I had figured out exactly what I wanted to do. I went to Hobby Lobby and found big wooden letters that spelled MOM and then went to a friend of mine who is good with wood and he got them glued together and put a hook on the top 'M' so it would hang straight on the wall. Then it was my turn. Over the next couple of day I secretly looked through old and new photos of all of us and copied/printed off a ton of them. I had photos of my sisters and me, my sister's family, Dan, my mom when she was younger, my cousins who my mom helped raise, and even some of our friends who considered my mom as a second mom. I then worked on cutting and fixing them on just right to fit the wood letters and gluing them into place. I used a basic glue stick and for the most part they all stayed on really well. Then I took laminate paper and covered the whole thing to make sure pictures wouldn't start peeling. Now that I look back, using gel medium would have been WAY simpler and probably would have made the process go much faster, but I am still proud of my work.
It looked plenty simple and fairly inexpensive. Our friend also agreed to make the cupcakes for it! So, I made a trip to Walmart and got everything I needed. I would like to say that I got them made right away and had plenty of time to focus on other, slightly more important, wedding planning but I didn't. I procrastinated until closer to the big day than I care to admit. When I did buckle down and make them, however, it only took a couple of hours and they all turned out great! Definitely a Pinterest Win in my book!
Dan and I were trying to be very cost efficient for our wedding, so we did a lot of stuff ourselves. One of them being the centerpieces for our reception tables. We had fiddled around with a lot of ideas for what we could do. The basic candle, some flowers of our wedding colors, a jar of colored sand. We also thought about throwing Dan's taste in there and having each table have a bottle of habanero sauce as the centerpiece. We were about out of ideas when our friend, who was making our cake, sent us our answer. She texted Dan a picture of a Cupcake bouquet that she found on...wait for it...Pinterest! We both liked the idea so I did some more "research" and found an awesome tutorial. |
